On October 10, Chris Schmidt demonstrated turning and embellishing a wide-rimmed wooden platter at AVA Gallery in Lebanon. This was our first meeting in the new location. (You can also use Easy Off oven cleaner which is Lye and a lot of other nasty chemicals, including butane, monoethanolamine, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, sodium hydroxide and diethanolamine. Inhaling these chemicals (which is impossible to avoid while using the product) can potentially cause major respiratory irritation, but may also lead to headaches, confusion, nosebleeds and even, with long-term use, cancer.The product label contains warnings about using it with “adequate ventilation” and to “avoid breathing spray mist.”

The Upper Valley Woodturners Club is excited to announce a new partnership with AVA Gallery in Lebanon, NH. Beginning on Saturday, October 10 we will be holding our meetings in the wood shop at AVA every other month. We hope to expand our membership and reach a larger audience in and around Lebanon, while bringing attention to the outstanding facilities at AVA Gallery.

In preparation for this partnership, the club has purchased a Powermatic 2035 C lathe with light and swing-away tailstock to be housed in the AVA Sculpture Studies building. This lathe was made possible by a generous donation from Verna James, in memory of her loving husband, Peter, who was a founding member of the UVWC.

The partnership allows any “maker members” of the AVA Gallery to attend our meetings in Lebanon free of charge. It also allows our members to use the lathe and other woodworking facilities at AVA with a membership rate based upon their ability to pay. Maker/mentor membership at AVA includes opportunities to teach and/or participate in classes, exhibit and sell work in their Bank Street Gallery and promote work in their Member Directory. 

As of November 6, 2021 the UVWT meetings will once again be live and in-person in the Thetford Academy Shop. Due to continuing COVID-19 concerns, we require vaccinations for all attendees, and we will be wearing masks during the meetings. We hope this will provide the safest possible environment for our demonstrations, show and tell, and general discussion. Come join us.

It is with great fondness that we remember Bob Katz, one of our most active members, who passed away Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at his home in Grantham.

It’s very sad to hear of Bob’s passing. He was the first woodturner I met when moving to NH. He told me all about the Granite State Woodturners and our club.

Bob had so much energy and was always trying something different to improve his turning art. Bob was one of the founders and 1st president if the Upper Valley Woodturners. He will be missed by everyone.

Recently, Bob demonstrated a painted rim technique using moon paint. That video is available here. 

The UVW club will be sending a memorial contribution in Bob’s name to the Grantham Community Crisis Fund, PO box 1192, Grantham, NH 03753.
